MOTHERS' MILK - The Original Food
When filmmaker C.M. Hardt feels pressured to stop breastfeeding her baby and get back to work, she goes on a quest to understand why American culture is so unsupportive of breastfeeding. She discovers how challenging breastfeeding can be to new mothers and how in the U.S. the majority have switched to formula by the time their babies are three months old, despite indisputable scientific evidence that long-term breastfeeding is significantly better for a baby’s health and wellbeing.
MOTHERS’ MILK follows C.M., as she becomes a “lactivist” who comically delves into Americas’ obsession with breasts, the influence and profitability of the baby formula industry, her conflicted new identity as a mother, society’s devaluation of nurturing, how elements of feminism threw the baby out with the bathwater, and whether steps other countries have taken have been effective – and if so could they work in the U.S.
